You've just had your bags carried up to your room. You reach into your pocket and... how much is the right amount? Too little feels rude, too much feels silly.
Tipping, called baksheesh, is part of everyday life in Egypt. It's always appreciated, never compulsory, and much easier once you know the customs. Here's a simple guide.
The golden rule: keep small notes
Before anything else: get some small Egyptian pound notes on day one. Most awkward tipping moments come from having only large notes.
Drivers
On a private transfer the price is fixed and complete: tolls, parking and waiting are already included. A tip isn't expected. If your driver went out of their way, helped with heavy bags or waited patiently, a small tip is a kind way to say thank you, but it's entirely up to you.
